while MSG was unfortunately getting torn down by the heat and lebron’s triple double, its ugly cousin of a venue across state lines was also getting torn down…
last time i saw this guy was 6 years ago at msg on the musicology tour. amazing to watch this guy wrap a packed stadium full of people around his finger. still in my opinion the greatest live music experience by a solo artist you can see today, and arguably the best living guitar player there is.
“can i play guitar for you?” yes prince please go ahead and make john mayer of the douches look like a complete amateur thanks
Rob Swift destroys decks paying homage to Fat Beats NYC… this day really took me back to my college years spent cutting class and swimming in the seas of the most official hip-hop scene in the world. Amidst a packed AC-less crowd, I absolutely knew I would run into friends new and old at this place w/o even having planned to meet there. I knew I would only run into the truest hip-hop fans from miles around.
Wish I was in NYC to see the last two days - Tanya Morgan, Roli Rho, Neil Armstrong, Pete Rock, Masta Ace, J-Live today… Just Blaze, A-Trak, DJ Scratch, DJ Premier on Saturday. WOW. but for all of you who will be, go support! Peep the schedule below and make sure to show some love at FatBeats.com

HOSTED BY: EMILIO SPARKS
This March 23rd, SOBs is hosting a showcase for Hip-Hop’s masterminds of the underground scene. Neako the Rubix Cube, Shawn
Chrystopher, and Stalley will guarantee to leave audiences in awe of their impeccable ability to express themselves with matchless flow.
One of three talented rappers, Stalley, pursued an career playing basketball all of his life but an injury that impeded his
journey to the courts became a blessing in disguise when Stalley decided to follow his secondary passion, Hip Hop. Collaborating with artists such as Methodman and Redman have earned Stalley the recognition he deserves. Stalley’s hard work ethics and determination have given him the title as an underground champion in the music industry.
Shawn Chrystopher, an independent and resilliant artist on the map, works to deliver the utmost original elements of Hip-Hop sound
with a combination of lyrics that leave listeners blown away. Shawn performs, produces, mixes, and masters all of his own music, thus justifying hthe California native’s title as one of the most determined musicians on the scene.
Ambitious and self-made artist, Neako, has been thirsty for a chance to create new themes to rap music since a child. Recognized by peers and even Hip Hop legends such as Bun B, Neako has been able to display his glwoing talent on Hot 97, MTV, and Sirius XM. Neako continues to produce his own tracks and perform his unimaginable shows.
Check out Vicarious fam Metermaids (Blog / BandCamp) and Styles P performing at TONIGHT’s kick-off show for the Rock The Block Fest at SOUTHPAW in Brooklyn… dope lineup for Day 2 also:
Missed out on 88 Keys and barely caught Asher’s last two songs, one of which was a Jim Jones-guest-supported version of “College” which made the crowd filled with college kids go ape shit (ah those were the days, sigh), but soon as Cudi took the stage the show took off straight out the building and into outer space.
Taking a page from Kanye’s 2008 Glow-In-The-Dark Tour, Cudi had a pretty amazing stage setup full of fluorescent lights and sports-stadium-bright videos being played behind him. Though I managed expectations for his show, knowing he doesn’t yet have an official album out, it really didn’t matter in the end as he tore through “Is There Any Love” (sans-Wale), “Embrace The Martian” “Cudi Spazzin,” “Make Her Say (I Poke Her Face),” “Mr. Solo Dolo,” “Sky Might Fall,” and “Man On The Moon,” and a few more joints (in no particular order) and closed with a mix of all “Day N Nite” versions (sans-Jim Jones who made an appearance in Asher Roth’s previous set). What might have been most impressive is how Cudi absolutely tore the packed house down with no surprise guest appearances - in the end, he really didn’t need any. Mr. Solo Dolo killed it.. solo dolo.
Gotta say after seeing Kid Cudi perform live I’m even more of a fan now. Watching him was like watching Kanye’s nephew up there - tearing the house down all by his damn self just like Yeezy did for a packed MSG crowd during his tour last year. When Cudi’s debut album Man On The Moon: The Guardians drops on August 25th, look for it to be one of those career-defining classic debut albums that’ll get him some possible Best New Artist nods. If it wasn’t official before, it’s super official now - Cudi’s the truth.
check out some flicks from the show…
and a flick of Jim Jones with Asher Roth doing “College” - they should all have done a version of Day N Nite to kick off Cudi’s set while Jones was in the building… that woulda been dope. ’scuse the blurrage I do believe some wasted douchebag was jumping into my shoulder at this point
