Apple giving $100 credit to early iPhone buyers

September 6th, 2007 · No Comments

After the price of an 8 GB iPhone was reduced to $399 from $599, CEO Jobs agrees to give store credit to those who paid the original price.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — After receiving hundreds of emailed complaints from existing Apple iPhone customers angry about a steep price drop, chief executive Steve Jobs says the company will give certain customers who bought the gadget at its original price a $100 credit.

Customers who purchased an 8 gigabyte iPhone before Apple Inc. lowered its price to $399 from $599 will receive a $100 credit toward any purchase at an Apple retail store or on its Web site.

iPhone free of networks: Follow up

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) — The teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.

George Hotz holds up the hacked iPhone he traded for a car.

George Hotz, of Glen Rock, New Jersey, said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Louisville, Kentucky-based mobile phone repair company.

Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for “a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones.”

“This has been a great end to a great summer,” Hotz wrote.

The 17-year-old Hotz said he will be sending the three new iPhones to the three online collaborators who helped him divorce Apple Inc’s popular product from AT&T’s network. The job took 500 hours, or about 8 hours a day since the iPhone’s June 29 launch.

I would not buy an iPod right now

August 16th, 2007 · No Comments

mystery-ipod.jpg

“We’ve gotten a deluge of emails over the last week from readers and insiders speculating about the next iPod release; after all, it’s been a couple months since Apple loosed the iPhone, the new iMac is official and living large, and current iPods have seen a price drop — something that only comes strictly mandated by Apple HQ. What’s more, sources at retailers are continuing to tell us that Apple is slowing down iPod shipments, strongly suggesting the company is running out its current stock to make room on shelves for new product.

We can’t speak to what specific technology Cupertino’s got brewing behind the scenes (we know it’s OS X-based, and hear it’ll use more flash), but whatever it is, we’d wager it’ll be released in September or October. And not just because Apple’s has taken to launching at least some new iPods every year since 2003, or admitted that it considers its iPhone business its “third”, separate from its dedicated music player business (and thus wouldn’t consider the iPhone its big iPod launch for 2007), or has just generally been mum about the iPod all year. It’s more to do with the fact that since 2004 the company has statistically fallen into the groove of using those two months to launch new flagship iPods (probably thanks to their close-but-not-too-close proximity to the holidays).

Do we have inside dope from Apple on this one? No, none at all. Just a lot of retail reports and mounting evidence that suggests a pretty obvious conclusion. Yeah, we expect new iPods this year (seriously, why wouldn’t there be?), and if we were gamblin’ men we’d put our money on the September - October. Of course, we know Steve will totally read this and launch in November or December just to mess with us, but hey, as long as the masses get their music players before our annual present-opening ceremonies, everybody’s happy.”

iTunes gets Zeppelin…

July 30th, 2007 · No Comments

According to The Observer Led Zeppelin, who have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide are entering the world of Steve Jobs offering their tracks on iTunes. It won’t be every Zeppelin song however it will be a collection including standards like “Stairway”, “Whole Lotta Love” and “Dazed and Confused”. This is a major victory for Apple as Zepplin was one of few major bands that had still held out on selling their songs on iTunes.
