Cast the impending doom of the planet and general everyday hassles to the back of your mind – you know that there is still good and beauty in the world when the band of the creative 33-year-old girl‚ seen in (amongst others) the film ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’‚ makes an album that beats out the rock harder than a swarm of burly bikers at a teen pop concert.

‘Four On The Floor’ is that album‚ and Juliette And The Licks is that band. And‚ just to add to the outstanding brilliance of the album‚ it would appear that Juliette Lewis now enjoys rocking out with costume.

Repackaging yourself as a serious‚ official musician is never easy for a Hollywood star‚ but Juliette Lewis manages to wail‚ shout‚ kick and scream her way out of her pigeonhole like a wild cat. Growling like Siouxsie Sioux‚ whilst fuelling every song with passion like Courtney Love‚ Lewis’s ‘Four on the Floor’ is an addictive‚ intoxicating mix of Jack Daniel’s-tinted punk rock‚ which leaves you with a kind of tingling‚ feeling dirty‚ used‚ spat out and strangely aroused. All the while forgetting the fact that she was at one time Brad Pitt’s girlfriend.

Opening track ‘Smash and Grab’ takes off with the same erratic rage that characterises a lot of Lewis’s acting work and has more than a passing resemblance to Patti Smith’s ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Nigger’.

The superb single ‘Hot Kiss’ is a brilliant preview to what the album holds. Sexually charged from the get-go‚ this album has an almost live feel to it.

The addition of amazing session musician Dave Grohl on drums is a fantastic piece of this artistic package‚ and is almost certainly responsible for the Queens of the Stone Age influence‚ not least noticeable on the track ‘Purgatory Blues’.

But while each track of pounding‚ raw-emotional rock is thoroughly listenable and enjoyable‚ its lack of divergence from good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll does reveal the possible limitations of the band. However maybe good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll is indeed what the world needs.

Juliette and The Licks have been on a world tour to promote ‘Four On The Floor’.

The Manic Street Preachers return with an impeccable new album, set to release a deliciously stimulating assault on ears everywhere.

The wait and the anticipation for an impending Manic Street Preachers album is almost unbearable for any Manics fan, however their latest album ‘Send Away The Tigers’ was certainly worth waiting for.

The Manic Street Preachers are back on top form with their eighth studio release ‘Send Away The Tigers’, made up of ten triumphant tracks, the album although enthused with a rather energetic rocky sound, constantly maintains a rather delicate beauty, for which credit should be given to the Manic Street Preachers for their faultless music and song writing abilities.

Starting off with the title track the album looks promising from the off set. A steady and catchy opening paves the way for the tracks that follow, and fans will instantly find themselves singing along with ease.

The first single to be released off of the album is ‘Your Love Alone Is Not Enough’, a beautiful duet between Nina Persson of The Cardigans and James Dean Bradfield. Nina Persson’s voice is as graceful as ever, and lends itself perfectly to the track, making it all the more compelling. Essentially a two-way conversation about love, religion, democracy, and Richey, the single is a track of understated loveliness.

So many of the songs on ‘Send Away The Tigers’ stand out, it is truly a profound album and an absolute joy to listen to, however ‘Autumn Song’, ‘The Second Great Depression’, and ‘Imperial Body Bags’ are tracks that hold a lot of weight, and are certainly worth a mention, with a great mix of catchy riffs and beats accompanied with interesting lyrics, they help to make ‘Send Away The Tigers’ sparkle.

Listeners will be delighted to discover the hidden track on ‘Send Away The Tigers’, a bold cover of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’. Normally the thought of a John Lennon cover would make one cringe, it’s just not something that should be done as it’s often difficult to envision a decent cover of a Lennon track, yet the Manic Street Preachers manage it fantastically. ‘Working Class Hero’ is quite an apt song for the Manics, and throughout the track one can truly feel that each word is heart-felt.

‘Send Away The Tigers’ is a wonderfully strong album, both lyrically and musically, but Richey James Edwards influence is still clearly missed. A band known for their intelligent and often political lyrics, the Manic Street Preachers may have expectations hanging on them, although ‘Send Away The Tigers’ does appear to connect back with the bands roots, filled with subtleties it is not quite as political as their past albums, however this does not make the album any less relevant or potent.

‘Send Away The Tigers’ does seem to be the most commercial album that the Manic Street Preachers have ever released, but whether you’re a hardcore Manics fan or you’re only just discovering them, ‘Send Away The Tigers’ won’t disappoint you.
