Santogold
Santogold is Santi White; born in 1976 in Philadelphia, with a voice and sound quite unlike any other, released her debut self-titled album this year.
Before listening to this CD, I was already very aware of her whether I knew it or not. She gets a lot of radio air-play on the UK’s radio 1 and has had singles featured in several commercials, both US and UK.
My good friend wikipedia also tells me she has worked with the man with the midas touch, Mark Ronson…. What a babe.
But back to Miss Santi; first off all the album artwork itself does appeal to me. It’s gold and sparkly, need I say more? I really can’t read any of the track titles on the back of the CD but the sparkles might be what’s distracting my eyes!
Having L.E.S Artistes as a first track is just mind-blowing, I fucking love this song. Her quick, smart, aloof lyrics just make me melt and want to eat her up.
Change, change, change,
I want to get up out of my skin
Tell you what
If I can shake it
I’m ‘a make this
Something worth dreaming of.
This album is full of consistency catchy songs made up of catchy choruses and hot words. I am big on clever lyrics, I love words and I melt for people who can write stuff that keeps me interested. And it doesn’t matter that Santi is fucking hot as anything.
Having said she has a voice quite unlike anyone else; I still stick by that but a times she does sound like vintage Gwen Stefani with the ska and reggae influences heard in Shove it and starstruck. That is by no means a bad thing, I love vintage Gwenny! Moving onto “Lights Out!”, I am hearing some Blondie and a totally different voice which I still am in love with.
I think that everyone reading this should buy this album. Now. And thank you vicarious for sending me this, it might be my favorite yet!!!
While lurking her myspace I discover she is friends with MIA, am I surprised? No.
Do I want a sex tape of the two to surface? Yes.

Foo Fighters- In your honor
Members- Dave Grohl- Guitar/Vocals
Taylor Hawkins- Drums
Nate Mendel- Bass
Chris Shiflett- Guitar
To my surprise when I opened my latest bag of goodies from the goodpeople at vicarious, I discovered In Your Honor, with an originalrelease date of 2005; this isn’t by any means a new CD I am reviewingit because I love those foo fighters so much I couldn’t resist anangsty trip down memory lane with those anthemic, bittersweet songs.
As usual I will grace you with a pearl of wisdom from wikipedia, thistime not about the band per se, but their namesake. Did you know theterm “Foo Fighter” was coined by allied aircraft pilots in WW2 todescribe UFOs seen flying over the skies of Europe?! Well I did not. Perhaps I am dumb.
Back to the matter at hand, I absolutely adore everything about this 2disc album. The elaborate Americana infused album artwork is awesomeand appeals to my old school Americana obsession. There is also abuffalo which makes a few appearances in the artwork, not much I cansay about him but… he’s cute!Disc one begins with In Your Honor, the awesome prolonged guitar andfeedback filled intro sends chills down my spine because I know whatscoming next; the gravel throated words of Mr Dave Grohl. I still can’tdecide if he’s singing or shouting at me through my speakers but Ilike it either way.I feel the entire album has a much more late 90s rock feel thansomething that was released in 2005. Perhaps that’s because Iassociate most angsty rock with the 90s.
This album makes me want to listen to ash and reminisce over old times. The perfect sountrack to”one of those days”.Moving onto one of my favorite songs of all time, DOA, I almostcouldn’t wait to hear that guitar intro and those dark, creepy, catchylyrics. “It’s a shame we had to die my dear. No one’s getting out ofhere alive, this time” is always something I’d expect to hear from TheMisfits rather than Dave Grohl, but he sings it well. The beginning of disc two is like a dark, rock lullaby. Mr Grohl issinging me into a sad sad sleep but I still can’t stop listening. If I didn’t know better I’d think this is the kind of thing you release when an angel visits you in your sleep to tell you that you’re aboutto be assassinated and you want people to mourn in those last, miserable songs you ever sung.
Then the crooning beats of Virginia Moon kick in which instantly liftmy spirits and make me wish I was dancing in a black and white movie.Norah Jones’ voice fits perfectly with Dave Grohl’s to make a songthat could melt the heart of a hardened criminal. Wow I love thissong.I am going to cut off my review here before I drive everyone insanewith my babbling but, in conclusion, this is an awesome, well-loved,anthemic album. Capable of evoking every emotion you have.

Otep- The_Ascension
Members-
Otep Shamaya- vocals
“Evil” J. McGuire- bass/backing vocals
Aaron Nordstrom- guitar
Brian “Haggis” Wollf- drums
With their kooky album artwork and back-to-front E or possibly 3 for
all the l337 |<1D5 out there, i knew this must be the same ot3p i once
listened to as a 16 year old full of teen angst and needing a shouty
female to look up to.
Once again i trusted my good friend wikipedia to tell me something i
didn’t already know. And it did! Until just now i was unaware that
Otep is actually the vocalist’s name, who incidentally is very hot and
i would quite like to see her naked. Wiki also tells me that Sharon
Osbourne fell so in love with this band that she offered them a spot
on the 2001 Ozzfest tour. I also can’t help but notice they have been
through a lot of drummers over the years.. spinal tap anyone?
Having also toured with Static-X and Bloodsimple i feel there is only
one way to describe this band- “nu-metal”. It seems like people hate
this genre name but it is nothing to be ashamed of. No matter what
your friends say, they have been a fan at some point, i’m sure!
The intro to this album is not quite what i remembered of them, an
eerie whispering/singing was coming out of my speakers and i didn’t
really know what was going on. I thought for a second i was listening
to some old creepy Tori Amos… until it broke into the clever,
creepy, quick lyrics i knew and loved.
I had always thought Otep sounded somewhat like Tairrie B of My
Ruin/Tura Satana fame and that thought is still with me. Although not
everyone’s cup of tea… this is another band that tickles me.
Although nu-metal is not all this band spews out, track 3, perfectly
flawed is a pleasant surprise. It is mellow and almost ballad-esque
but still has the same creepy lyrics you would expect and hearing the
lines, “You’re perfectly flawed, you’re perfectly incomplete…” makes
me feel 16 again.
The “niceness” soon dissapears as track 4, confrontation, comes
blaring out of my speakers. The politically fuelled anger in this song
makes me think that i would like to meet Otep and hug her.
All in all i like this album, it is what it is…female-shouty nu-metal rage.
And who doesn’t need some of that in their lives?

Horse the band- A Natural Death
Members-
Erik Engstrom- keyboards, gameboy, samples
Nathan Winneke- vocals
David Isen- guitar
Dashiell Han Arkenstone- bass, baritone, organ
Chris Prophet- drums
So I had heard of this band before, but never heard them. I decided I
should google them and of course good old wikipedia came up with a
description that made me love them already; “Nintendo-core”.
The album art work by David Klein definitely appealed to me, like the
blood brothers got stuck in an old western. I hope they dress like
that all of the time.
Vocalist David Winneke has apparently been known to describe his
lyrics as “Lynchian” (referring to director David Lynch), being
brought up on Twin Peaks I can assure all you Lynch fans that you will
not be disappointed by this claim.
On first listen I felt like I was listening to Darkest Hour via Sega
Mega Drive but a more diverse range of music emerged as the album went
on. Track 3, the sparking secret of super sapphire, is more mellow and
creepy and then a little later track 8, sex raptor, is like the
best/worst 80’s dance music ever until you listen to the lyrics and
realize how morbid, eerie and ever so slightly NIN they are. I’d like
to feel Nathan’s teeth, I hear they’re long and hard.
Technically this band are awesome- vocals, guitar, bass, drums,
keyboards; everything is tight and solid. It is refreshing to find a
band now who don’t have any weak links.
With vocals reminiscent of Marilyn Manson, Alexisonfire, Sikth and
everything inbetween; this band tickles me in all the right places.
I feel like Horse the band are what Enter Shikari would like to sound
like in 5 years with some effort and refining.
All in all, if you like any of the previously mentioned bands or
simply cannot define your music taste- pick up A Natural Death and I
think you will be as happy as me.
So thank you vicarious music for being the matchmaker in this
blossoming new love affair with Horse and myself.
