Last night the dirty south made an appearance at Mercury Lounge in NYC. Newcomers Cage The Elephant are an old fashioned breed; hailing from Bowling Green, Kentucky their sound is reminiscent of the late 70’s era of rock and roll and their performance style is distinctly Iggy Pop.
Making up for the sparse turn out of their NYC debut, the young five-piece is talented enough to fill the spaces in-between. Their music is loud and rich-perhaps a bit too much so for the tiny confines of Mercury. However, I can see it translating geniusly to an outdoor arena and truly believe they will be a crowd favorite at Bonnaroo.
After seeing them live there is no doubt that these boys love their music. Their show includes very little audience interaction, which is fine because it’s not for lack of performance skill; but rather because they obviously go inside their lyrics, and riffs, and drum lines. Keep an eye open for these guys, the buzz is only going to keep growing…written by B
