WOXY.com, the radio station that started in Oxford in the early ’80s as 97X and cultivated a name for itself as “The Future of Rock and Roll,” has announced on its Web site that is is moving to Texas in September.
A post on the station’s site reads: “Come Sept. 8, WOXY will be broadcasting full-time from Austin, Texas. Our new digs in Austin will allow us to take things to the next level and bring you even more live Lounge Act sessions. You’ll not only get to hear the sessions, but you’ll be able to see them as well. We’ll have our own sound stage that will allow us to shoot video of all of our Lounge Acts and bring them to you in HD video. As hard as it is for us to leave Cincinnati, we’re all pretty excited about what is to come.”
WOXY’s tagline, “97X, BAM! The future of rock and roll,” was quoted by Dustin Hoffman’s character, Raymond Babbitt, in the 1988 movie “Rain Man,” enhancing the station’s reputation.
The station has been an innovator not only in its rock broadcast format but in its move to online broadcasting. It returned to the air as a radio station, in addition to maintaining its online status, and is heard on WVXU-HD2.
The Enquirer will continue to update this story as more details become available.
