Tom Morello surprised Anaheim last night by stepping on stage mid-set during 4/7 Bruce Springsteen concert.

Morello, has previously recorded a cover of Springsteen’s “Ghost of Tom Joad” with his band Rage Against The Machine, helped Springsteen and the E Street Band reinvent the song as a full-blown rocker.

Handsome Furs April 6, 2008

The Handsome furs hit Bowery Ballroom Sunday night before they open for Spoon this Wednesday.

For those of you unfamiliar, Handsome Furs are a husband, Dan Boeckner, and wife, Alexei Perry, duo. Many of you may know Dan Boeckner as one of the lead singers and songwriters for Wolf Parade. Handsome Furs is his side project. I mean seriously, what a wonderful couple’s event to go on tour and record together!

Anyway, I thought their release Plague Park in 2007 was an underrated release.

Being a Sunday night, Bowery Ballroom was slightly less than full; however when Handsome Furs hit the stage the crowd was ready. The duo played most of Plague Park, which due to the format of the music, one guitar and heavy synthesizer, is a tough combination to pull off live. For those of you that have seen Wolf Parade live, I am sure you know Dan loves to rock out. No difference here. He rocked and rocked some more, while Alexei did her best at apparently making love to the synth machine. The highlights of the night for me, which are two of my favorite on the album, were “Dead + Rural” and “Sing! Captain”. Dan also admitted that he was not a philosophy major that studied in Columbia South America as some internet sites may have reported. Also, “Dumb Animals” is about crystal meth.

While Handsome Furs may be tough to get into only by their live performance, which was good, not great, I am sure all fans were pleased. Those unfamiliar with their music might have been less interested.

The other highlights of the night came from the new songs off their upcoming album Face Control, which will be released later this year. The songs seemed much more rock oriented, which is the way I like my Handsome Furs and Wolf Parade. Dan Boeckner rocking out.
