MGMT is a band that has received a lot of attention over the past year or so. Much of this was do to their lone masterpiece: a narcissistic, self-destructive anthem of the rockstar lifestyle entitle “Time To Pretend”. The band’s psychedelic style and heroin-addict physiques do well to catch one’s eye. But all this isn’t enough to save a mostly boring and unoriginal album. The album has it’s share of ups and downs, but it’s mostly music that no sober person could embrace. “Oracular Spectacular” is worth a listen or two and “Time To Pretend” is song that I will spin plenty more times, but aside from that track, the album is more or less a second-rate Flaming Lips album.
In all fairness, I suppose The Flaming Lips went through their fair share of growing pains and MGMT certainly has promise. But for now, I remain largely underwhelmed.
