T.I asks to do T-Giving while awaiting D-Day

November 7th, 2007 · No Comments

I can’t tell you why this is newsworthy-so just don’t ask!

Apparently even rappers turned felons have a soft spot for spending the holidays with their families.

T.I, who is currently under severe court-appointed monitered house arrest while awaiting trial for illegally trying to purchase a series of unregistered firearms, has asked the courts permission to host his family’s Thanksgiving dinner.

According to the stipulations of his house arrest, he cannot have more than 3 visitors at a time without the permission of the court.

Billboard and Sounscan Respond

November 7th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Something’s fishy….the answer to my banter and questions posed below.

I find it very interesting that mere hours before the Soundscan charts were due to arrive in the inboxes of music execs. everywhere they decided on a new format-allowing single retailer exclusive albums to be elidgible to chart.

“We know that some retailers will be uncomfortable with this policy, but it was inevitable that Billboard’s charts would ultimately widen the parameters of to reflect changes that are unfolding in music distribution. We would have preferred to make this decision earlier, but only became aware within the last 24 hours that Wal-Mart would be willing to share the data for this title with Nielsen SoundScan.”

This action has surely pissed off label heads everywhere because the outcome is that EVERYONE ELSE on the chart is pushed a position lower than projected.

Mind you, my problem does not lie with single retailer exclusive albums allowed to chart-I think that’s fair.  I just think it’s suspicious WHEN the decision was made.

Guilty Pleasure

November 7th, 2007 · No Comments

Ok, GUILTY!  I do like this song, I am not sure why  I feel guilty about it but I do…

What you may not know…Ryan Tedder (One Republic singer) is an incredible producer, see below:

Tedder wrote and produced Jennifer Lopez’s top 40 hit “Do It Well” (which hit #1 in Japan); co-produced and wrote Natasha Bedingfield’s current hit single “Love Like This” (with The Runaways); co-wrote with Jonathan “JR” Rotem & Evan “Kidd” Bogart on Ashley Tisdale’s current hit single He Said She Said; co-wrote and produced Leona Lewis’s first international single “Bleeding Love” (which is “the” fastest selling single of 2007 in the UK as well as the “biggest” UK radio debut, reaching #1 in October 2007); produced and co-wrote Blake Lewis‘ first studio album A.D.D. (including 1st single Break Anotha); wrote and produced single “Thrill Is Gone” by Baby Bash, and he also worked on Paul Oakenfold’s Grammy nominated album, “A Lively Mind”. In addition, Tedder has written and produced singles with artists such as Chris Cornell, Paula Deanda, Timbaland, Christina Millian, Bubba Sparxxx, Shayne Ward, Tupac, Lemar, Esmee Denters and a number of songs with various different rock acts in the U.S. and abroad.

Wednesday Morning Industry Banter…

November 7th, 2007 · No Comments

Please indulge me for a few minutes…

I like Wednesday mornings in the music industry.  Even with a long, tedious day ahead of me, I look forward to getting into work with a cup of coffee, opening my email and spending a few minutes with the fresh soundscan chart.  Sometimes it makes me happy, like when Kanye broke through this industry’s downward spiral and went old school selling almost a million copies in his first week.  Sometimes it makes me want to jump out a window, like when I realize that I could have put out a recording of the bus that stops in front of my apartment every 15 minutes, asked all my family and friends to buy a copy or 3, and could have landed myself in the top 200…

Regardless, this Wednesday was one of those exciting Wednesdays-there was obviously MUCH buzz about the number 1 position-Britney Spears, despite horrific press and NO promotion, was going to lock it down with 350,000 copies.

To make it even MORE interesting, this technically wasn’t even going to be the real #- The Eagles were on point to sell 700k copies of their long awaited new disc, but because of their innovative Wal-Mart only deal, were no elidgible to chart.

So, now I’m completely confused.  Because when I open my soundscan, there are The Eagles, sneakily stealing the #1 position from “The Legendary Miss Britney Spears”, scaning over their estimated 700k.  She still takes #2, selling not even 300k…

But I thought The Eagles couldn’t chart? What’s going on?

I call a bunch of friends, mainly those of mine that work in music sales and turns out they’re all stumped too and all have calls into soundscan…

Hoping to get an answer for myself-and all of you shortly.
