Into the Wild.

September 26th, 2007 · No Comments

NEW YORK – Monkeywrench/J Records’ Into the Wild soundtrack featuring original music written and performed by Eddie Vedder makes it’s chart debut at #2 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart and  #1on the Billboard Top 200 this week with 39,331 albums sold. The Into the Wild soundtrack features nine original songs, including “Guaranteed”, as well as cover songs “Hard Sun” and ”Society.

Critics have already embraced the soundtrack, Rolling Stone Magazine gave it 3 ½ stars and said  “…Eddie Vedder tells the young man’s story on the soundtrack to Sean Penn’s Into the Wild, tossing his weighty baritone onto earthy, folky tracks that temper the romance of absolute freedom with an eerie foreboding.” The Los Angeles Times raves, “What began with Penn’s request for a handful of songs to fit into his nearly complete film grew almost by accident into a brief but cohesive album that recapitulates the movie’s journey in miniature.”  USA Today says “…the singer’s pretty, folk-based tunes have an open, slightly ragged, organic simplicity that suits the tale’s panoramic grandeur and forlorn undercurrent.” And Sean Penn says in an interview with the New York Times “I deliberately underwrote parts of the script because I felt that the music and the lyrics would tell part of the story,” he said. “I liked a lot the way that works in ‘The Graduate’ and in Hal Ashby movies like ‘Harold and Maude.’ His original notion was to use several different singer-songwriters, but while watching Mr. Hirsch’s performance, he said, he started hearing Eddie Vedder’s voice. He showed a rough cut to Mr. Vedder, who responded with a score that is big and soulful.”

Inspired by the true-life story of Christopher McCandless, singer and guitarist Eddie Vedder wrote and performed music for the forthcoming feature film adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s best-selling literary work Into the Wild. Written and directed by Sean Penn, Into the Wild stars Emile Hirsch, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Hal Holbrook, Catherine Keener, Jena Malone, Kristen Stewart, Vince Vaughn and Brian Dierker. The film was released in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, September 21st and will be released nationwide on October 5th.

Rock Kills

September 26th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Vicarious Music is devastated to report that a Smashing Pumpkins fan was killed at the band’s concert in Vancouver this past Monday.

Exact cause of death has not yet been reported, but the death is so far thought to be a mosh-pit/crowd surfing related incident, according to one witness who said that the young man fell while crowd surfing.

The police have determined there was no foul play involved.

Although vicarious music are advocates of concert going and love nothing more than to see a bunch of fans enjoying a show, dancing, crowd surfing and stage diving, we take this opportunity to ask that you are all careful and thoughtful when taking part-accidents like this do happen.

Anti-Flag head into studio for new LP

ANTI-FLAG HEAD INTO THE STUDIO FOR NEW LP

WITH LEGENDARY PRODUCER TONY VISCONTI

New York, NY- Acclaimed Pittsburgh- based band, Anti-Flag have teamed up with Hall of Fame producer Tony Visconti to begin recording the follow up album to their 2006 release, For Blood and Empire on RCA Records. Immersed in Sainte-Claire Studios in Lexington, KY preparing for a spring 2008 release, the innovative pairing have already introduced some new and surprising elements into the band’s established punk sound. Visconti has put his illustrious stamp on records of such artists as David Bowie, T Rex, Brian Eno, U2, and Morrissey and is now bringing that same passion and vigor to arguably the past decade’s most ferocious politically-tinged band Anti-Flag.

As bassist Number 2 divulges, “In a sense we are trying to create the most D.I.Y. record we’ve ever made. This concept is precisely why we chose Tony Visconti to aid us in our vision. This is the first album we have not recorded with a click track since our first release and we are trying to make it sound as live and having as much energy as possible. When writing songs for this album we set out to challenge ourselves and anyone who has any preconceived notion of what Anti-Flag means, believes in, stands for and sounds like.”

In addition to working on a new album, on October 2 Anti-Flag will release a limited edition EP, “A Benefit for Victims of Violent Crime.”  This cause hit close to home for Anti-Flag earlier this year, when Number 2’s family experienced the horror of losing a family member when his sister and her boyfriend fell victim to a violent crime, leaving behind a young daughter and son.  The EP features five new Anti-Flag studio tracks, along with five live songs recorded at Pittsburgh’s Mr. Smalls at the conclusion of the band’s War Sucks, Let’s Party tour earlier this year.  All proceeds from the EP are going to the The Center for Victims of Violence and Crime (www.cvvc.org) as well as educational bonds.   The EP will be released on the band’s A-F Records label and distributed via Red Eye Distribution.

Anti-Flag’s prior full-lengths – Underground Network (2001) and Terror State (2003) – were released by the gold standard of indie-punk labels, Fat Wreck Chords. The band’s DIY mentality and outspoken dedication to the punk scene brought about their own widely-distributed record label, A-F Records.  The label is now home to several other underground bands as well as other Anti-Flag releases.

Stay tuned as we unveil what is sure to be a landmark album in Anti-Flag’s history…
