An open letter to Britney Spears:
Dear Britney Girl.
I would like to start by saying that I have been a LONG time supporter of all you have done. Being in my early 20’s myself, my friends and I have grown up with you have used your music to find understanding in our own lives. We have danced to you at the clubs, sung with you in the car, and cried to you in the comforts of our own homes-we even dubbed you “Britney Girl” as to make you part of the crew….
This is why I find your performance at the VMA’s last night so heartbreaking. I speak to you from all of your fans in the world, those of us who have stuck by all of your poor decisions and cracked out behaviors. Those of us who have defended you, and waiting for the day you would take the stage again and put all the nay-sayers in their places. I am not one of those critics who keep reading the tabloid to see what Train-Wreck Spears will do next; I am someone who until last night was on your side.
But when I say you let me down, I mean that as a VAST understatement. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT??? You didn’t even try! I know you can dance! I know you can perform! I have been watching you do that since I was 8 on the Mickey Mouse Club. People wanted you to succeed Britney, and you just crashed and burned.
MTV was in your court as they have ALWAYS been, they took a chance. They put aside all of your crazy behavior and what I’m sure was their better judgment to give you a chance to take the stage and blow our minds. Instead you chose to look like an underage stripper performing a solo piece at her dance school’s end of year recital for a group of horrified parents. I’m sure your dance teachers are so proud.
Where was the sexy Brit walk? I have spent years of my life trying to perfect what came naturally to you, and you blew that too. How many xany bars did you take down before your performance? Because you couldn’t keep your balance and kept zoning out, not singing our dancing for seconds at a time, looking like you were trying to figure out what to do with all the shiny lights.
Congratulations Brit, you blew it.
Side note: as a general rule I’m incredibly disappointed in the VMA’s this year. Their new format was just confusing and the whole thing was a snooze fest. Suiting because so is MTV.

Thoughts on MTV:
I’m having trouble deciding whether i think MTV is genius or despicable. While, on the whole, i thought the show was terrible (with the exception of whatever it was that Chris Brown did and I always like seeing Dave Grohl play just about anything) I did think that getting Brittany to open was ratings genius. Everyone seems to think it was benevolent of MTV to allow her to make her comeback splash, but if you think about it, it’s a no lose for MTV. How many more poeple tuned in last night just to see Brtittany choke? I know i did. On the other side of the coin, in the off chance that she knocks it out of the park, still good for MTV. Now, what’s borderline shady is following Brittany w/ Sarah Silverman who’s soul job it was to roast her. Not that Brittany is bright enough to defend herself even if she’d had the chance, nor do I think it’s Silverman’s responsiblity to pull punches, but Brittany’s performance was so bad, it kinda spoke for itself. I.E. The art of intentionally displaying unintentional comedy (which MTV is the master of doing w/ reality programs like the Hills and My Super Sweet 16 et al) tends to lose it’s luster if you immediately point out the obvious. Therefore, Silverman’s commentary immediately took the mood from amusingly bad to just sad. While, in reality, it was obviously both, we’d all feel better about it if the feelig we were left w/ was just amusingly bad
