Amy Winehouse at Highline Ballroom

May 9th, 2007 · No Comments

Amy Winehouse hits her mark: slings back multiple pints of Guinness like it ‘ain’t no thing’.

Wino is the real deal. Yes, I’m aware, this has been said before, so please excuse me for not coming up with a more original opening sentiment. but there is honestly NO better way to describe her.

There is no one I feel comfortable comparing her to because she is such a strange concoction, in a way creating a hybrid of music’s past present and future. How the hell does a voice that grandiose, full and rich come out of something that teeny tiny?

Some of the more notable moments from the show:

-the four pints of Guinness she slammed back during her hour set (only can imagine what she put away prior to getting on stage)

-Asking the audience how their Cinco de Mayo was, then stating “when was that, last night? No? Oh well, what do I know?” and going directly into “Rehab”

-closing her eyes during “You Know I’m No Good” (encore), reaching out for the mike stand, missing, and stumbling.

-the continuous pulling down of the right shoulder of her shirt to reveal her new tattoo with Brett’s (her fiancée) name on it.

I would just like to note that she needs to do away with her combo backup dancers/singers. These two huge men, flailing around TOTALLY distracted my attention from Wino, who is by definition and talent, the show.
