Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and Anti-Flag recently joined political views on stage during the encore of their March 8th, 2007 show at Irving Plaza in Gotham. They performed the entirety of Woody Guthrie’s often misunderstood folk song, “This Land Is Your Land.” Previously working on their final Fat release, The Terror State, when I saw Tom walk in I thought there was a good chance these outspoken rockers would rock the stage together.
Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” inspired Guthrie to write “This Land Is Your Land” in protest because he felt Berlin’s song was half-baked and egoistical.
